Virginia’s Championship City, is situated on the Roanoke River between the Allegheny and Blue Ridge Mountains. Home to Roanoke College and the Salem Red Sox baseball team, this beautiful city offers a little bit of everything from downtown walkability, to suburban bliss, or rural living.
Welcome to Virgnia’s Championship City! How did Salem earn that moniker? The city recently celebrated hosting their 50th Stagg Bowl in 2023 (NCAA Division III Football National Championship), and has hosted 102 NCAA Championships in men’s and women’s basketball, baseball, softball, soccer, volleyball, and lacrosse. With the newly renovated, state-of-the-art facility at Roanoke College, the NCAA has awarded 15 new Division III Championships that will take place in Salem over the next seven years.
Of course, Salem is also home to The Salem Red Sox, a Single-A, Minor League Baseball affiliate of the Boston Red Sox.
Located just off Interstate 81, Salem offers easy access to live music venues, farmers’ markets, hospitals, dining, retail, breweries, coffee shops, and more.
Salem boasts a highly-rated public school district with four elementary schools, one middle school, and one high school.
Thanks to being home to so many championships residents have access to world-class facilities and events. Moyer Sports Complex re-opened in 2024 after a $27.9 million renovation now boasts 13 pickleball tournament-ready pickleball courts, four updated regulation-size softball diamonds, and a new community playground with special needs accessibility. They are also home to the Salem Half Marathon which happens every fall.
With a reputation for hosting first-class sporting events, the historic City of Salem offers craft breweries, antique shopping, and many other exciting cultural amenities.
